What a fun ride, and almost a complete departure from Mignola’s earlier work! I liked how long and epic this narrative was。 Finally, all the previous hellboy-prophecies made sense and his destiny is given an explosive (semi-?)conclusion。 Looking forward to the final chapter!

This story was better than Volume 2。 There was more plot, and less meandering。I'm looking forward to book 4。I'm not sure if the BPRD book are combined into an Omnibus like the Hellboy stories, but I'd definitely buy them。 There are so many different names for those titles, I don't even know where to start。 This story was better than Volume 2。 There was more plot, and less meandering。I'm looking forward to book 4。I'm not sure if the BPRD book are combined into an Omnibus like the Hellboy stories, but I'd definitely buy them。 There are so many different names for those titles, I don't even know where to start。 。。。more

It’s Hellboy。 It’s good。 You should read it it if you like comics, horror, fantasy, the supernatural, pulp heroes, King Arthur, mythology, superheroes, mystery, or any combination there of。 It’s a classic for a reason。 They don’t make three movies out of a bad comic book series。

It was a wild ride, and very, very complicated。 I had to keep going back several pages to remind myself who was what and where things were happening。 Art was amazing and will always be my favorite style。 Can't wait to read it all again next year when I forget everything that's happened。 It was a wild ride, and very, very complicated。 I had to keep going back several pages to remind myself who was what and where things were happening。 Art was amazing and will always be my favorite style。 Can't wait to read it all again next year when I forget everything that's happened。 。。。more

WOW! FANTASTIC!I was sure no omnibus could ever be as great as the first one, but this collection proved me so wrong。 The twists! The turns! The action! The laughs!I actually teared up a little at the end, which no other Hellboy story has ever caused me to do, so props to the storytelling。 Man, what a fantastic ride!I can't recommend this omnibus highly enough。 Each story is truly wonderful, with the last, The Storm and the Fury, being my personal favourite。Side note: Someone tell Duncan Fegredo WOW! Loved the mixture of Authurian legends, British folklore and Mignola’s crazy universe。 I also loved how Hellboy consistently rejects power and violence towards innocents。

Hellboy Omnibus Vol 3: The Wild Hunt was a treat。 Just in time for Halloween, it is a large volume (526 pages with notes) containing three stories surrounding one overarching story arc。 Before we delve into the basics of the story, you are likely thinking why waste your time? The answer is simple_ this is excellent work。 On a creative, mythological, storytelling, and artistic level this is a stellar example of the comic book creator's craft。 Mignola's stories are filled with creatures from different cultures and myths。 They all flow together due to the vehicle, which is Hellboy。 Hellboy may seem rather shallow, especially in light of the vast majority of his dialogue seems to be monosyllabic grunts。 But rather, the nigh-on indestructible Hellboy takes the reader with him as he travels different worlds fighting creatures drawn from a variety of places。 A true pleasure to read and a very good horror comic。While I am a big fan of Mignola's art, I must say that Duncan Fegredo did a creditable job with the artwork。 Dave Stewart's colors are also a standout。 A very visually appealing GN。Finally, we have the story。 There are three individual stories and a main story arc。 First the main arc- it centers around the coming of the Queen of the Witches and all the actions surrounding her reincarnation。 It will culminate in the end but will be shown through snippets within the stories themselves as they are happening concurrently。The first story "Darkness Calls", recounts Hellboy's adventures with the Baba Yaga, who seeks revenge for her stolen eye。 She sends Koshchei the Deathless after his head。 A great adventure with some great characters (Baba Yaga is awesome!)。 Meanwhile, the Queen of Witches has been rescued from the pit。The second story is "The Wild Hunt", wherein Hellboy is invited by the Wild Hunt to hunt an outbreak of Giants。 However, there is treachery about, as Hellboy will find to his sorrow。 This one is full of wonderful characters from Morgan Le Fay to the Queen of Witches herself。 Her release is told in this story。 We also have some measure that she will be a Queen of destruction and blood。"Badhbh, Macha, and Mor-Rioghain。 So now all will know me。。。not Queen of Witches, but Goddess of War。"The third and final story "The Storm and the Fury" is the culmination of it all。 As Nimue, the mad Witch Queen seeks the destruction of the world by releasing the Black Dragon, Hellboy is granted Excalibur to lead England's Noble dead to war。 But there is more to the story, and it revolves around Hellboy's own destiny, but no spoilers。 In the end will be the conflict between Hellboy and Nimue。It was a very interesting and poignant ending。 Vol 3 is a great GN and well worth the time of any comic fan, not just Hellboy fans。 Heck, even if you are new to comics and want to see why people read them? Read this and see if you don't like it。 If you appreciate good storytelling, cool mythological research and backgrounds coupled with excellent artwork-then this is for you。 。。。more

I am a full convert to the church of Hellboy。 Mignola really came into the peak of his storytelling prowess here。 The gravity of the story, the deft blend of mythologies and legends。 Where in the first two volumes I sometimes struggled to remember and see the lines between characters and stories, here everything clicked into place more easily。 This volume really wowed me。

I really like Hellboy, Mignola's dark blocky art style, and the occult/supernatural story threads of Hellboy and BPRD comics。 But this volume is a very long walkabout for Hellboy after quitting the BPRD and it feels like a series of tangents loosely connected instead of a strong plot driven story arc。 I want to love it, but I just think it's missing something。 I really like Hellboy, Mignola's dark blocky art style, and the occult/supernatural story threads of Hellboy and BPRD comics。 But this volume is a very long walkabout for Hellboy after quitting the BPRD and it feels like a series of tangents loosely connected instead of a strong plot driven story arc。 I want to love it, but I just think it's missing something。 。。。more

Epic。 This collects probably the three best Hellboy arcs - Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury - which build and build to a stunning conclusion。 Mignola’s mythology melding has never been better or more fascinating than it is here, as he brings together everything from Celtic, Russian, Norse, and Arthurian legends。 Even though Hellboy’s story continues after this, it feels like a capstone to his journey。 So many elements from previous stories come to a head。 It’s a dense re Epic。 This collects probably the three best Hellboy arcs - Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury - which build and build to a stunning conclusion。 Mignola’s mythology melding has never been better or more fascinating than it is here, as he brings together everything from Celtic, Russian, Norse, and Arthurian legends。 Even though Hellboy’s story continues after this, it feels like a capstone to his journey。 So many elements from previous stories come to a head。 It’s a dense read but ultimately rewarding if you’ve been following closely。 And even if some stuff goes over your head, you can’t help but be awestruck by the world Mignola has created。 I loved reading this collection and already want to do a reread of the whole series, because the world-building is one-of-a-kind。 。。。more

Hellboy really elevated itself with the three part storyline weaved through Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury collected in Omnibus 3。 It is clearly Hellboy at its most ambitious。 For awhile, Hellboy sort of meandered in both his life and publishing schedule。 For these three storylines, Mike Mignola brought on Duncan Fegredo to do the art。 The story begins with Baba Yaga’s quest for revenge against Hellboy to Hellboy discovering what was in store for him and his destiny as Hellboy really elevated itself with the three part storyline weaved through Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury collected in Omnibus 3。 It is clearly Hellboy at its most ambitious。 For awhile, Hellboy sort of meandered in both his life and publishing schedule。 For these three storylines, Mike Mignola brought on Duncan Fegredo to do the art。 The story begins with Baba Yaga’s quest for revenge against Hellboy to Hellboy discovering what was in store for him and his destiny as the heir of King Arthur to Hellboy’s deadly fight against Nimue, the Blood Queen, and her final transformation into a primordial beast by the ever encroaching Ogdru Jahad。 Each part of the storyline is filled with major consequences for the series and the larger Hellboy/Mignolaverse world。 And, in the end, we are delivered to Hellboy in Hell。//--//Duncan Fegredo’s art, with the always-impressive Dave Stewart on colors, is a great match to Mignola’s art style and writing while still making the designs his own with slightly more detail。 The art remains very angular with small boxes focusing on the quiet beats and tiny moments that add story flavor to a scene。 Overall, it’s a great mix of storytelling that leaves the reader in awe, shock, and obsession。 。。。more

My god- this was the best so far in the series。I was completely enthralled, the story, the art, the interweaving of various mythos-- It was all great。I honestly thought it wouldnt get better after the Baba Yaga-Koschei arc, but surprisingly it did。 And the art man, the art。

OK, this is it。 This is the thing。 I get it。 I mean, I got it before -- I have enjoyed all of the other Hellboy I have read up to this point。 But this is such an extremely grandiose culmination, pulled off with faultless aplomb。 I have read so many books and experienced so much media that tries to make a story like this happen, but it turns out it's hard to make a large-scale mythic epic, I guess。 I get it though: this makes me want to try, too。 OK, this is it。 This is the thing。 I get it。 I mean, I got it before -- I have enjoyed all of the other Hellboy I have read up to this point。 But this is such an extremely grandiose culmination, pulled off with faultless aplomb。 I have read so many books and experienced so much media that tries to make a story like this happen, but it turns out it's hard to make a large-scale mythic epic, I guess。 I get it though: this makes me want to try, too。 。。。more

This was a hard book to read, in the physical sense。 It is thick and heavy and with a softcover it is a sort of limp, dead weight that puts strain on the wrist。 That aside, my impression of the content is similar to whenever it was I first read these volumes。 Being entirely non-Mignola art (except maybe a chapter or two) it doesn't feel like it is quite proper Hellboy。 At least the entire volume wasn't drawn by Richard Corben; the back cover blurbs of the short story omnibuses made a great to do This was a hard book to read, in the physical sense。 It is thick and heavy and with a softcover it is a sort of limp, dead weight that puts strain on the wrist。 That aside, my impression of the content is similar to whenever it was I first read these volumes。 Being entirely non-Mignola art (except maybe a chapter or two) it doesn't feel like it is quite proper Hellboy。 At least the entire volume wasn't drawn by Richard Corben; the back cover blurbs of the short story omnibuses made a great to do about his art being featured so extensively in them, but it never really was quite to my taste and I might not have every finished the Hellboy series if I had to go through volumes of his art to do so。Anyway, I like the melancholy aspect of this book, the sense of things fading away or retreating from the world。 It is a common motif in fantasy, and has been an aspect of other parts of the Hellboy saga, but feels especially poignant here, especially with the sad giant who retreats underground rather than face the return of Nimue and the violence she promises。I am left wondering a few things。 Firstly, where in early 2000's Britain did all of these witches straight out of Romantic era fever dreams of medieval witches sabbaths come from (though some of them are implied to be just really, really old, so I suppose they were just hiding out somewhere)? Secondly, how does Alice hear the leader of Nimue's army mention a dragon as it clashes with the army of Britain's noble dead? And where does that event take place? There are other places in the book where there is that sort of ambiguity of characters being aware of things that are on the same page, but should be in a different location, but that is the clearest; and most of the others involve Baba Yaga, and I just assume she is scrying on things。 Finally, some references in this story kind of make me want to know what is happening in the BPRD continuity of the setting, but sadly I've tried reading some of those and just could never get into it。 。。。more

After having read the first three omnibuses I am now certain that Mike Mignola is not a good writer。 His stories past the first omnibus are very loosely structured and usually--again, based on my experience so far--devolve into a kind of gothic road movie where Hellboy has to go from point A to B, and then random crap happens on the way that gets him sidetracked。 Going into a forest? You bet some mythical creature will show up with cryptic, foreboding words。 Old house? Ghosts will appear who will first take human form, fooling Hellboy (but not us), and share their stories with him。This structure--or lack thereof-- also plagues this third omnibus (the longest one), which follows one continuous plotline about the mad Witch Queen Nimue and her quest for revenge (recently adapted into a terrible movie I'm told)。 But this is the only negative I can say about the book, because boy, is it strong on theme。 Mignola combines his signature brand of occultism and Lovecraft fetish with Arthurian legends and the best characters that British/Irish/Russian folklore can offer。 And all this is tied in with Hellboy's central story about fate and the end of times。 It just works so well that the theme alone would have carried the book for me。 But then there is the art。。。Ah, the art in this book。 If a movie has excellent cinematography, the expression "every frame is like a painting" gets thrown around a lot。 Well, I guess it works with graphic novels, too。 I mean look at this Or thisThe book is simply stunnigly beautiful to look at。 So much so that I actually want to frame some of its images。 Now, you need to know that, apart from episode covers (like the first image above), the book wasn't drawn by Mignola himself, but by a guy named Duncan Fegredo (using Mignola's sketches)。 Fegredo's style to me is similar in spirit to that of Mignola, though it is less abstract and the lines are much smoother。 Then again, I don't know much about comic book art。 But I would say that in terms of atmosphere, these two are of a piece。 Fegredo not so much imitates Mignola, but pays homage and elevates his art to new heights。I recommend this book to anyone interested in Hellboy and wants to indulge their eyes。 But do start with Seed of Destruction and the other definitive early Mignolas。 。。。more
